Garden walks in the garden of Wales – Carmarthenshire!
Garden Explorer
There are so many beautiful and magnificent gardens
in Carmarthenshire that the county has become known as the 'Garden
of Wales'. There
are gardens of an historic nature. There are picturesque landscapes
and informal gardens. There are woodland gardens with rare and
unusual
plants. There are formal - design led gardens, all of which will
take your breath away in their own individual seasons.
From so many it has been difficult to select particular venues
for our 'Wales Garden Explorer' breaks. However, we have chosen
two gardens on the basis of their general interest and overall quality
that will, we hope, appeal to devoted gardeners who will find information,
ideas and inspiration, as well as those who will enjoy their garden
visit as a memorable and rewarding experience. Included in all the
Glynhir breaks is free access to our grounds, parkland and gardens
which includes the walled garden, woodlands, the sweet chestnut
Waterloo walk, the babbling river with it's pools, cascades and
30' waterfall.
The National Botanic Gardens of Wales
Located in the magnificent 18th Century parkland of the former
Middleton Hall the National Botanic Gardens of Wales is situated
within a 568 acre estate enjoying spectacular views over the surrounding
Tywi Valley. The gardens centrepiece is The Great Glasshouse - the
worlds largest single span greenhouse - with plants and species
from Mediterranean areas of the world set in rock faces, ravines,
streams and waterfalls. Within the estate there are lakes, welsh
woodland and the largest broadwalk in Europe.

Aberglasney
'A garden lost in time'. The story of Aberglasney spans many centuries,
but its rescue from dereliction in the past few years is an episode
more dramatic than any in its past. Aberglasney's origins remain
obscure, but they may lie in the fair court owned by Rhydderch ap
Rhys and praised by the bard Glyn Cothi in the 1470's as being encompassed
by 'nine green gardens' - orchards, vines and young oaks. It is
one of the oldest descriptions of any house and its gardens in Wales.
The parapet walk is a rare example of o 16th/17th century garden
feature. The grounds include a yew tunnel, lake and three other
walled gardens with rare and unusual plants. Aberglasney has become
one of the Country's most exciting garden restoration projects and
is destined to become one of the most fascinating gardens in the
UK.
